A LITTLE HISTORY
It wasn’t always about the world of work
In my past life more than 20 years ago, after qualifying as a Cambridge CELTA TEFL teacher in Madrid, I found myself teaching English in the little-known country of Paraguay in South America. Whether I was there running away from something, putting something back or proving something to my family I couldn’t be sure. Whatever the reason my two adult children will give you their own opinion being small children during that time.
A little history
Revellup’s tropical roots
In rural Paraguay I was passionate my free English classes could be accessible and meaningful for all regardless of ability and the student’s location.
We welcomed young people of all ages and taught in any available location from kitchens to shops to the shade of fruit trees (schools were unreliable and often shut). Last count we had 300 students walking considerable distances in insufferable heat and putting up with my ridiculous ideas – could we put on Macbeth in both English and the indigenous Guarani language? And would the British ambassador turn up?
a little history
Will they get a job?
I realised as access to English grew everywhere, additional skills were needed. It wasn’t enough to learn English and bag a great job.
But back then I didn’t have any insights to share and I was still young myself. The internet was also young and the options for many from modest families seemed to be limited to nursing overseas. But not everyone wants to be a nurse or even travel abroad. Was there another option?
After a varied career I’m now finally in a position to teach both a sellable skill and the English language.
