TRY SOMETHING DIFFERENT

Digital marketing work experience

Revellup was created for complete beginners to gain work experience in digital marketing* in a rarely-taught area which is high in demand and you needn’t know the first thing when you join us.

On this page you’ll find everything you need to know and how to join.

Let’s learn online ads!

In our friendly group, you will be joining us in the same way you would if you were joining a digital agency as a junior or intern.

If you can :

  • Create ads and manage them – we’ll show you
  • …with some gentle pressure from us – because they’re real ads costing real money
  • …and broaden your marketing knowledge – we’ll teach you

…it could be the easiest way to break into digital marketing and other related careers to earn a fairly recession-proof salary to live the life you want to live.

And if you think Google’s ads are a passing trend, did you know Google’s online ads are their biggest revenue stream worth annually around 162.5 billion dollars?

Essentials you need to know:

Why Revellup?

Is this real work experience?

Will I get a qualification?

How much is it?

What will I learn?

Do I need to do anything before joining?

What if I’m not in the UK?

How do I check times, spaces and join?

If you have more questions, check our extensive FAQs at the bottom of this page. We love your questions and add to them regularly. And you can check out who’s behind the scenes here.

Good to know: is this really digital marketing work experience? Okay – strictly speaking we know this is not work experience in the modern sense (i.e. full time and paid) but this is the closest thing we can offer for people who want to experience what real digital marketing work is like for as long as you need alongside a professional who will share a carefully curated curriculum with you. Use the group to kick-start a career or fill an empty CV or out of sheer curiosity.

meaningful work experience for all – tHEY SAid IT CAN’T BE DONE

“I hope they’re wrong”

digital training professional headshot caroline revell

Caroline set up Revellup after she saw wannabe marketers and career changers of all ages and backgrounds struggling to find opportunities in an industry which rarely recruits beginners.

How does anyone get digital marketing work experience when next to nobody offers it unless you’re connected, and those that do often want a couple of years experience?

She recognised that digital marketing is also a starting point for diverse careers such as IT, software development, business & project development, entrepreneurial projects and many more – but you have to start somewhere and digital marketing is one of the easier entry points.

Caroline still works full time for a US tech giant but dedicates her free time to Revellup now that her two children are grown up.

She has the time to share her love of teaching and her knowledge from 15 years in business and digital marketing.

She hopes Revellup will grow sufficiently for other passionate professionals to assist in her mission.

And did we say anywhere here she’s a self-confessed over-sharer?

Make sure you’re ready to take notes if you work together as the insights can come thick and fast at any time and in no particular order.

Caroline is currently based in the UK dividing her time between London and the East Anglian city of Norwich.

She’s a keen mountain biker, board game player and loves English summers but struggles with the post-Christmas British winter when she tries to escape somewhere overseas that’s hot and steamy where she has friends and family.

You can read a little bit more about how Caroline went from TEFLA teacher (Teaching English as a Foreign Language to Adults) to Revellup here.

howmuchisittojoin

How much is the work experience programme?

£35 per month (Rs. 3,680). This keeps us running. We keep the cost as low as feasibly possible to be accessible for everyone wherever you are in the world.

As we are not externally funded, the monthly contribution is our only revenue and covers every cost we have to keep this running from advertising accounts and software, to accounting and general administration.

For example, we may want to spend an hour going through the ins and outs of the best digital marketing software, but just one monthly subscription of ahrefs (a tool we love) will set us back £79 and SEMrush even more (another brilliant tool every marketer uses).

To pay just these 2 software subscriptions for a month would require 7 members’ subscriptions.

And that’s before everything else on the list that we need to cover and want to introduce you to!

And if by chance (a rare thing) we receive more in contributions, anything left goes back into Revellup to build in more real-world experiences and introduce more people to the individual power of careers in digital marketing and beyond.

Your questions

What if I’m in my 40s or 50s?

With the global shortage of experienced candidates, employers are no longer in a position to cherry-pick based on age, education or your swagger.

Unlike many careers, the only barrier going into digital marketing and other tech jobs will be yourself.

And did you know that the learning curve for beginners may be steep but it is short compared to many other professions?

This means you can start in your 50s or 60s with plenty of time to reach your personal peak and success before any thoughts of retirement.

In addition, many employers adapt advertised roles and career progression for the right person with more life experience if you have skills or qualities the team’s missing.

Do I need any special knowledge or skills to start?

Basic English

If you are not a native English speaker (i.e. English is not your mother-tongue), you should be at a level when you ‘more or less’ understand what someone says if they speak slowly.

If you are interested in practical English workshops to improve your digital English, Caroline runs short lessons every week details here.

Basic Maths

If you can use a calculator to add up some numbers or divide 300 by 30, you should have no problems.

Example:

A business owner has a monthly budget for advertising of US$300/or GBP£300 and wants to pay for ads evenly over a 30 day period, can you work out how much they can spend each day as a maximum?

*See answer to Maths question at bottom of page.

And if your Maths and English isn’t that great – don’t worry.

We know lots of people in IT and marketing who have dyslexia or don’t have great numeracy skills, are colour-blind along with many other personal challenges.

There’s normally a workaround so it shouldn’t hold you back unless you want it to.

I didn’t do well at school. Is digital marketing really an option for me?

Only you will know the answer after you’ve had a go.

Most people starting out in marketing know absolutely nothing about it.

And even if you come across any marketing students on your journey with us, what they studied will bear little if any resemblance to real-world application.

Why?

Because every business is different, every business owner is different, every team is different, every team’s resources are different, every task can be completed in a multitude of different ways, and because every day is different etc.

There is no one-size fits all in digital marketing, unlike in other fields, for example in medicine where all heart surgeons will perform heart surgery in more or less the same way and all bricklayers will lay bricks in more or less the same way.

In addition, digital marketing is also a very broad church.

This means there is no end to the range of specialisms within it, for example email marketing, content writing, digital PR, advert design, web design, data analysis, strategy and with overlaps in other specialisms such as coding, cyber security or data science.

Neither is there a personality type required for working in marketing or a particular background. You do not need to be outgoing and you can be come from a completely different career path, such as care work, retail, bio-science, the arts or long-term home-maker or unemployed.

And won’t anyone care that you don’t have the best qualifications from school?

Not if you can do the job, because there are not enough people to cater for the plethora of jobs available.

Think of it this way, does a homeowner want to see a plumber’s certificate after they’ve spent a week of soggy carpets and hauling buckets because all the plumbers they called each day are too busy.

In some ways, marketing is a bit like a leaking pipe, except that the leak requires regular patching in different places but never fully goes away as there is always something to do.

Very soon you will discover know your marketing strengths, what excites you and you will be dictating what, where and how you will be working – no school certificates required.

Disclaimer: we are not suggesting that there is no value to higher certificates, only that it is possible to do exceptionally well in marketing and IT careers off the back of your experience and passion without them, unlike many careers.

What’s Revellup like?

Is Revellup a course?

Yes and no.

Although we have an extensive curriculum that is bolted on after our real work, unlike many marketing courses, we are prepared to change ours to fit the needs and strengths of our group, recent trends, real-world conditions and the wider industry.

We do not want to be a top-down, we-know-best training provider.

Revellup is (or aims to be) a working collective of curious-minded people working, learning and growing together.

We are aware that even beginners can bring a lot to the table and shouldn’t be underestimated.

What will I learn?

We focus on online adverts, predominantly what are called ‘search ads’.

Search ads are the ads that you see marked ‘sponsored’ when you search for something on Google or Bing.

We have chosen to concentrate on them as they are a little-known but highly desirable skill.

You will learn to create the written ads from scratch and also improve ads that are already live by applying best practices and experimentation.

When you are new to digital marketing but have one core strength such as online ads that few others have, it will give you the greatest chance to get job interviews and win clients.

We also cover other areas of marketing (curriculum list) ads are the core of our work.

Is it like a digital apprenticeship?

No.

Apprenticeships in the UK usually require a full time Monday to Friday commitment for one year with a local business with day release for college.

You will usually have to find the business yourself, accept a low (but legal) minimum wage and commit to a full time commitment in an office.

Apprenticeships are not a practical option for busy adults with financial and other commitments.

This is one of the main reasons we started Revellup.

Is Revellup like an internship?

Yes and no.

Our group feels just like an internship, although we cannot call it an internship here in the UK.

Employment law regulations in the UK stipulate that internships need to be paid like any other job.

Another difference between us and an internships is that we do not cherry-pick applicants.

We accept everyone regardless of age, background or education.

The third differentiator between us and the average internship is that you don’t have to leave after one or two weeks.

With Revellup you can stay with us as long as you want until you are ready to take the next step.

Just like a real digital agency, group members with more experience take on greater responsibility such as managing client accounts autonomously whilst new members may assist on small tasks, research or work under greater supervision.

Your Questions After starting

Can I arrive late to a group meeting?

We recommend clicking on the group link at least 5 minutes before we start. This allows for connection issues or video call software updates which are annoying and cause delays. You may have to restart your computer.

It’s important to try to arrive on time because sometimes we want to start straightaway.

Waiting for 5 minutes for latecomers can feel like an eteeerrrrrnity so if you arrive late we may have already split up to start work.

If you think you will always have a problem arriving on time due to other commitments or timings, message our WhatsApp group so at least we know.

Your questions

What if it’s too difficult?

Tell us if you feel you’re behind the rest of the group. You might surprise yourself with what we can help with. It helps to think about other times you’ve learnt something new:

Don’t be too hard on yourself
It’s normal to feel overwhelmed at first
Some of us need repetition to ‘get it’
You will get there eventually

Do I have to attend every session?

No.

If you are fairly new to the group and have no responsibility yet, no need to message us if you can’t attend the odd session.

Simply join us at the next available meeting.

However due to the over-sharing of information and organic nature of our sessions you might miss out on a valuable shortcut, opportunity or career hack from someone.

You only need to WhatsApp us if you think something in your absence may need attention.

How big are the groups?

It varies.

We expect there to be no more than 10 active participants in each group in any given session with fluctuations to as low as 2 or 3 participants, especially around national holidays, vacations and exam periods.

If you are also taking the preparation course, that is very different, the group may be bigger with members of the public and community interest groups joining us.

If there’s something I enjoy – could I do more on that and drop some of the other work?

Absolutely.

It sounds like you have found something you enjoy or are curious about.

Ask us how you can practice it more, this could be in our group sessions or in your free time.

It might be something that needs attention but without your dedicated interest wouldn’t have got done otherwise!

Will there be opportunities to meet the group in person?

We would love to organise face to face groups and socials although it will be tricky if we are in very different places or even continents!

But we definitely welcome ideas on how we could organise anything which brings us closer together even if only some of us.

How can I learn faster?

By attending all the available sessions, completing the recommended certifications and all the homework tasks.

More ways:

  • Ask us about taking more responsibility as an account manager of an account you are familiar with.
  • Ask us about side-projects which are relevant to your personal career goals, perhaps you’d like to deep dive some data, try some coding or design either for us or for a client?
  • Support new arrivals who are struggling, this is a great way to see how far you’ve come yourself and solidify your own knowledge.
  • Space permitting, attend more agency groups or assist in the free preparation courses we run.

Will there be any holidays?

Yes.

Just please don’t ask us when!

We don’t have pre-determined holiday breaks like a college or University would, instead we take breaks when it makes sense for the group and/or instructors.

We will let you know when we think we are due for a break.

But you can take your own holidays at any time.

And you only need to let us know in advance if you think something in your absence may need attention, for example if you are the only person managing a task which may need attention from another group member while you’re away.

And if your time off is amazing – care to brighten our day?

“It’s sooo hard to work for free when you support yourself. I need something that fits around my full time job” -ON you tube

Will Revellup help me to find work?

Yes.

We hold free online sessions to talk solely about work where we can review your CV and job applications, advise on freelancing options and even how to start your own successful digital agency!

Unlike internships and apprenticeships, Revellup can be viewed as a private space away from the outside world where you can talk openly about your future plans in confidence and in return get solid advice.

We want you to do well. It’s in our DNA.

In fact we want everyone in our group to become an inspirational role model for others.

Revellup is definitely not the place for hiding your plans and dreams.

Why will learning online ads make it easier to into marketing?

Online ads offer an easy and lucrative entry point into digital marketing regardless of age and background.

Anyone who knows anything about them will stand out amongst other candidates because they not typically included on marketing courses and they are difficult to study on your own.

The new culture of working from home made training juniors riskier which led firms to hire candidates with proven experience.

This is because online ads are riskier for juniors because they are notoriously fiddly.

Mistakes can be extremely costly.

For example, there are hidden settings that are switched on as default but need to be found and switched off.

Juniors often forget and this oversight can cost a business tens of thousands a day in meaningless advertising spend, all because one tick box was left unchecked.

Moreover many experienced marketers do not want to spend precious time training their junior colleagues as they are already over-stretched.

They will be already questioning their employer loyalty on a daily basis before they were asked a favour because of the number of recruiters who email them with job offers every week.

Any additional pressure to train a junior and they will be off. Because when you have experience, there is no shortage of headhunters reaching out to you every week with tempting offers.

With experience under your belt, you will be in a position to dictate how, where and when YOU want to work!

Can I get a job with a business client of Revellup?

We sincerely hope our members will get paid work with our clients, ideally on an account they have been working on with Revellup.

However we do not pressure either our members or clients into any paid arrangement that doesn’t work for both parties.

For example, you may only have 3 hours free a week.
Or you want a temporary arrangement of 20-30hrs/pw until you secure a full time role elsewhere.

And the best bit is, because we are neither a recruiter or a typical digital agency/employer, we can have these honest conversations.

Who? How? Why? What? Where?

How did Revellup start? What is Revellup’s goal?

Caroline Revell set up Revellup after she saw wannabe marketers and career changers with zero experience struggling to get opportunities in an industry which rarely recruits beginners without experience, despite the industry needing increasing numbers of new recruits year on year.

Caroline has over ten years experience in marketing and still works full time for a global US tech SaaS company, she runs Revellup with a passion unpaid in her free time now her children are all grown up.

She hopes Revellup will grow sufficiently for other passionate professionals to assist in her mission. And did we say anywhere here she’s a self-confessed over-sharer? Make sure you’e ready to take notes if you work together as the insights and experience can come thick and fast at any time and in no particular order.

Caroline lives between London and Norwich in the UK, and occasionally works out of South America. When she’s not working her day job or busy with Revellup, she likes to swim (for leisure), play guitar (badly) and get out on her mountain bike (still a complete beginner after 5 years).

Unlike many digital course providers and digital bootcamps, you will never receive instruction from our ex-students. All our trainers bring with them:

5 years or more industry experience
Proficiency in latest tools
Quantifiable personal metrics/KPIs
Exceptional rapport-building skills
A natural desire to over-share

If you’re joining us between Jan & Sep 2024 it is likely you will be taught by Revellup’s founder Caroline who has over 15 years experience on the front line of marketing and business.

whydoesrevellupcharge

Why does Revellup charge so little?

Revellup wants to be accessible to anyone, whatever their circumstances, wherever they are in the world.

We do not want to charge different amounts in different countries.

We have calculated that a monthly contribution of GBP £35 a month (approximately US $42, or Rs. 3,680) even for our international members in countries outside Europe/USA, such as Colombia, India and Kenya, should not eat up more than 10% of a low monthly wage.

Top of page

Where does our money go? What do our contributions cover?

This is our only revenue and needs to cover every cost we have from marketing, software, website work, accounting, general admin and when we grow, wages for experienced professionals.

We will always try to keep the cost as low as possible to be accessible for everyone, regardless of age or background and wherever they are in the world.

One example of where the money goes: We may want to spend an hour with you going through the ins and outs of the best digital marketing software, but just one monthly subscription of Ahrefs (a tool we love) will set us back £79 or another, SEMrush (brilliant too) is $129 a month.

To pay for just 2 subscriptions for one month would eat up around 8 Revellup subscriptions!

And that’s before everything else on our list that we might want to introduce you to! 🙁

Why doesn’t Revellup receive funding so we don’t have to pay?

Funding is not a sustainable model.

It immediately imposes a limit on the number of people we can serve with no guarantee that we would receive the same funding in the future.

Funding can also create an unfair situation where we are under pressure to cherry-pick new members who we think will have the greatest chance of success.

Worrying about next year’s funding would affect all aspects of our mission from the quality of our work to the future of Revellup itself.

On top of that, we couldn’t save money from funding for a potential withdrawal of funding the following year because most donors want their money to be spent within the funding period, not hidden away as back-up.

Why don’t the businesses we work for pay anything?

Unlike normal businesses we do not charge clients for the work we do.

This puts us in an extremely strong position to focus on YOU and the businesses we work for. Instead of trying to keep the business owner happy (so he pays us each month) we can focus on priorities.

It means we get to choose the type of work we take on and decline anything that is unsuitable for our strengths, interests and goals.

It also means we are in an enviable position to tell business owners straight up what’s working and what’s not with 100% transparency without the usual marketing blag (and BS). This is something that business owners often need or want but miss out on.

And if a business wants to make a donation, we welcome them. Donations help us educate people both in the UK and around the world about the incredible opportunities in IT and digital from career advisors doing outreach work in schools to essential equipment.

Why do I need to pay if I’ll be working for free?

As far as we can see, the only way we can make Revellup work is by a small contribution from everyone.

With a monthly contribution, we can provide a career-changing opportunity to everyone who’s interested, wherever they are in the world.

Without contributions, we would rely on money from elsewhere, either in the form of client fees or donations. Both of these would mean a cap on numbers and pressure to perform to keep the donors happy.

And of course, you’re not paying just to work, you’ll be surprised at how much Revellup can feel like an educational course, mentoring and a mutual friendship/social group too.

Answer to Maths question: *$300 divided by 30 days means an advertising budget of $10 a day. Don’t worry if the question confused you. Many marketers are hopeless at maths, and even when the numbers are right, you can often do what you want with numbers. As long as a business succeeds from its marketing efforts somewhere, everyone will be happy!
